What the?
Okay, although I can be very complex sometimes, I am apparently a very simple person. I find it VERY hard to keep up with movies that don't make sense immediately. Movies like The 6th Sense are different - I could figure that one out halfway through. However, movies like Pulp Fiction, Memento, etc are complete entities on their own. There are too many stories and characters in motion, that I usually just mentally check out - and wait for the credits.
This movie was..um....silly.
Was it a premonition? Was she crazy? Did she cause his death? What day was the actual premonition? Why did the days pass in random order? There were so many inconsistencies in this movie, that I don't even know where to start.
Is it me? Or is Hollywood purposely trying to confuse the hell out of the audience to make them feel dumb?

Hmmm. I don't know where to begin with this one.
It was a mix between a campy flick, and a serious drama. The only reason I say this, is because the whole idea of chaining a girl to your radiator as a method of rehabilitation is asinine.
However, I kinda liked this movie. The characters grow on you very quickly, and I generally like most of the films that Christina Ricci stars in. Sam Jackson manages to do his very tired character that shouts out profanities all the time, but whatever - that's just him.
Justin Timberlake also proves himself as a respectable dramatic actor as well.
It was worth the free pass.
I do have to say that Christina Ricci has become waaaayyy too thin now. 10 lbs would do her good. She should hang with me for 3 days. I can work miracles.

I have to mention what really happened here.
My cousin Allyson and I were supposed to go for Japanese food, and then go see Black Snake Moan. On our way, she drove into this MASSIVE pothole and got a flat. We had to park the car and change our plans last minute, so we hopped on a bus and went to Yonge and Eg. The movie wasn't playing at that location, so she suggested Dreamgirls. Normally I would have said "hell no" but she was already having a shit day, and we had both gone to my Uncle's funeral earlier. I decided to not be a pain (odd, I know).
Now to the movie.
It was okay. What really weirded both of us out, was the fact that a full hour passed in the movie before they had their first musical singing scene. This made things very strange - since you started to believe that it was an average drama. Some of those scenes were kinda awkward, but the one scene where Jennifer Hudson belts out:
"And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"
IS AMAZINGLY riveting - and put shivers down my back the whole time. What a voice.
I laughed that one of the characters had the same name as my sister, because Laurelle goes through life with people thinking she is black before they meet her. HAHAHAHAHA.
Eddie Murphy did not earn an Oscar in my opinion, so the fact that he stormed out of the theatre is just proof that he thinks he's more wonderful than he is. Perhaps it's because...oh I don't know...that NORBIT was released the same week?

I'm not a huge Pedro Almodovar fan, but the movie that I wanted to see (Mount Pleasant) had finished that day at this theatre. So Kerri and went to see this movie at the Carlton in Toronto. LOVE THAT THEATRE.
The movie was okay.
One good thing came of it. Before this film, I couldn't handle watching Penelope Cruz, but after watching her in movie when she speaks Spanish, she had a real presence. I think she really sang in the movie and that was cool to see as well.
There was one part that I loved. Every time a woman said hello to another woman, they would kiss each other on the cheek - but in such a dramatic way that there were about 5 separate kisses with strong suction. Very endearing.
By the end, the storyline was very much like Marion Bridge. I won't give it away, but it's something you wish no one you love would have to deal with.

I was disappointed with this movie.
It was very lopsided.
His life was kinda bad. Then it was really bad. Then really, really bad. Then really, really, really bad. Then oh my god it's horrible. Then past horrible....horrific even. Shoot me in the head his life keeps getting progressively worse.
THEN IT ENDS.
With little typed paragraphs on the screen that tell you how successful he became in real life.
Here's a tip. You may want to show the good as well as the bad. It helps. Don't sell out and assume that the audience really cares about reading this tidbit. We paid $12 to see it.
Could Will Smith's kid be any cuter? I don't think so.

Porn with a good story? Isn't that an oxymoron?
This movie pushed the envelope in every way. Sook Yin Lee was veryy...hmm..forward in this movie. There was no simulated sex, it was full on- real intercourse.
I have seen movies in the past that have had real sex (Baise Moi, Romance, Intimacy,etc) but this took the cake for me. There were so many various lifestyles illustrated in this flick, and the characters were very believable. It was as though you were just a fly on the wall, watching the lives of these people.
When movies don't seem like they are actually scripted, it's much more exciting to watch. Have you ever seen "Kids"? I still don't believe there were actually lines in that movie. It seemed like it was totally improvised.
Anyhoo, back to the movie. Good for Sook Yin to be brave and do what she did. I'll be buyin' the DVD. Oh yes, I will.

Call me a simpleton, but I swear, I can't keep up with movies that are so interwoven that they are hard to follow. I saw this movie with Nancy and Lisa - I turned to Nancy half way through and said "are you following this?" and she said "not really". Then I turned to Lisa and asked the same thing - she responded with a "of course, duh!" type of comment.

By the end of the movie, when EVERYONE dies, I merely shook my head. It made me think of the time when everyone dies in The House of Sand and Fog. Very bizarre. What people find entertaining is different for everyone.
This movie was okay. Leonardo had a scowl on his face the whole time. He's trying way to hard to get an Oscar. Mark Wahlberg had the gayest hair I've ever seen and that made me giggle.
I loved the IRISH grey athletic t-shirts that they had on - I tried to find them online to no avail.
Anyhooo, it was a good night. Can't complain.

What a great movie. I loved everything about it - the scenery (Vancouver), the acting, and the story. I can't explain what it is that I love about Canadian movies. I just love them. There is a totally different feel to them. The sole focus is the dialogue, and the superb acting.
If this comes out on DVD I will purchase it.

This movie was hard to comprehend at first. It appeared that each couple was in the same restaurant, but the subject matter seemed very inconsistent and choppy. It was pretty short - about 75 minutes from beginning to end.
Once the movie was over - the director was there to answer questions. He let everyone know that when the actors showed up for work, he told them there were no lines. They just had to converse with the partner and create the story themselves. He would give them 3 pieces of information about their relationship and then told them to go at it. After hearing that tidbit, it totally made sense. It also made me appreciate the movie more. It would be a hard thing to improvise for 75 minutes with a total stranger. ...yet they all did a wonderful job in the end.

What a deep, depressing movie. That doesn't mean it was a bad one - it was just reallllly heavy. It told the story of the several native women that continued to go missing on skid row. It looked as though it was filmed on East Hastings in Vancouver, so it really painted a perfect picture of the conditions of the lives of these women.
Interesting movie for me. I always enjoy learning about the intricacies of the stories that appear on television in tiny clips.
What I love about the film festival is that either the actors or the directors are present to answer questions at the end. In this case, Carmen Moore and Tantoo Cardinal were there. Very, very interesting women. Good job.

Sheesh. Don't know what to say about this movie. It wasn't very convincing. These two guys are supposed to be bonding over a weekend camping trip...but nothing really happens during the course of the whole movie.
What I did notice is how the one guy, who hadn't transitioned through some rites of passage, couldn't connect with his friend who was married, with a child on the way. Sometimes, as the years go on, and you take different paths, it's hard to connect with someone you used to connect with. Life has taken you both in separate directions, and although that's okay, it's awkward discovering that.

This was a messed up movie - a modern "Misery" of sorts.
I'm a fan of Ellen Page (see Marion Bridge) so her acting was very fun to watch.
It's been quite a long time since I have blogged (6 months) so trying to remember the details of this movie is a blur. I recall thinking it was messed up; but a unique idea.
And Sandra Oh was in the movie - so you can't go wrong with her.

Ok, either I am hitting my sexual peak, or my tastes are changing. The whole time I was watching this movie, I was enamoured with Adrien Brody. I would NEVER have thought that I would find him attractive, but as a woman, we tend to grow more attracted to people the more we are around them..or get to know them. Not that I know Adrien, but you know what I mean.
The way he chewed his gum, his voice, his accent, his legs, hell, even his nose was wonderful. Skinny men. Mmm mmmm mmmm. I mean, look at him:
Anyhoooo, back to the movie. It was a decent plot, decent acting (more so by Adrien) and had both Molly Parker and Robin Tunney in it. Three people that are great. Ben Affleck? Well, he's sooo the same in every movie - and twice I caught black nose hairs in the close-up. What's up with that? Gaawwd.
If Adrien didn't make his character what it was, I would have said this movie was a 6, but with him, he brought up the rating by a point and a half.
I love you Adrien.

8/10This movie solidified my cynical views towards the oil and gas industry controlling the world. It made me angry at times, but man, it frustrated me beyond belief. The last 20 minutes was so dumb that it reminded me of a SNL skit with Chris Farley. Dan still imitates Nicolas Cage and I manage to giggle each time, remembering the absurdity of the flick. I just watched Ebert and Roeper last night - instead of Ebert, they had Aisha Tyler as a guest critic. I wish she was on ALL THE TIME because her reviews were fantastic. Okay, so I paid once again to see this movie, and I was afraid that I had only really missed a few minutes originally - and would be disappointed that I wouldn't see anything else worthwhile.
Boy was I wrong!
This movie is my favourite this year by FAR. The chemistry between the actors was outstanding, the writing was excellent and the storyline was crazy but it worked......
It sort of reminded me of "In Her Shoes", because as much as your family drives you crazy sometimes, you become over-protective with them when you feel they may get hurt emotionally. Toni Collette can do NO wrong in my eyes. She is a fantastic actor who brings a sense of warmth to every role she plays.You should really go see this movie. Don't wait for the DVD. Pay to see it so that these independent filmmakers can continue to make movies like this. I'm getting excited about the Calgary Film Fest!

Kevin, my little brother chose this movie. First of all, he's now my height. Unbelievable how much he has grown.
I took him to the first one a few years ago and I fell asleep for an hour...when I woke up, it felt as though nothing had progressed in the movie. I was dreading this one as well. The first hour was not bad....until the retarded sea creatures surfaced. It just went downhill from there. I wish I would have brought some toothpicks for my eyes because I was trying REALLY hard to stay awake.
Once it was done (one hundred and 150 minutes later), Kevin asked me if I liked it... I said no. He's finally at the age where I don't have to lie. I told him that I don't like movies that aren't real (futuristic storylines, science fiction, fantasy, etc). I like movies that have to do with real people, real events, and intelligent dialogue.
Will I be seeing the third one? Hellllll noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
I'm a movie snob, I know.

Uncle Paulie dragged me to see this movie and I have to admit I was dreading it. I didn't realize that it was a spoof ; I thought it was meant to be a serious flick.
Once I realized this, I sat back and enjoyed the movie. It was HILARIOUS.
I've read some message boards about this movie and most people understand what it was meant to be. Others who take shit too seriously think it was horrible to spoof a situation of people losing their lives in the air. I think those people need to take a pill.
Grab some popcorn, a Coke and sit back to enjoy the absurdity of this film.

-"I'm sick of these mother@#$ snakes on this mother@#$ plane!!!!"
I haven't been to a movie recently where it was acceptable to yell stuff at
the screen, but this was definitely an exception.

Saw this in Toronto at Bayview Village.......
Once again, I am going to bitch about the state of movie theatres today.
Not only have they overinflated the admission and concession prices,
they have cut out crucial positions such as full time projectionists.
75% of the way through this REALLY GOOD movie, the picture became
blurry...then REALLY blurry, and then disappeared altogether. We were
staring at a blank screen.
NO ONE CAME TO FIX IT.
My friend Andrea and another patron went to look for an employee to fix it... yet there was no one to be found. 20 minutes later, we were all out of the theatre, in the lobby, eating ice cream since the cooler was open, waiting for someone to surface. Eventually, three employees (two girls and one guy manager) came out of the staff room door laughing. They were shocked to see us all standing there pissed off. They refused to answer my question of "where were you guys for so long?" and instead offered us free passes. My guess is that they were:
a. smoking up
b. having sex
Either way, I missed the ending, was given two passes for Alliance Atlantis theatres which are only in Toronto and Victoria, and left pissed off.
I would love to see how this ends since it was a hilarious movie, with wonderful actors, and a spectacular dialogue.
Shame.

Who frickin made this movie and why?
I agreed to see this movie with Bob - and was not pleasantly surprised. It was hard to follow, and poorly made.
Is it just me, or does Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx think they are the sexiest
men on earth? I could feel their smugness and conceit through the screen.
Jamie, put your shirt back on.

Okay, if you've seen this movie it's because you're a Kevin Smith fan,
or because you were dragged to it. If the latter, you won't understand
my rating since it would come across as ridiculous. However, if you've
seen his other movies: Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, etc....... you'll love this movie. It had all of the same qualities - vulgarity,
intelligent dialogue, and hilarity.
I was hesistant that Rosario was in this movie, as I have never seen
her in a comedy - yet she was the perfect addition. I laughed my ass off, I
enjoyed the conversations, and most of all, I understood where these
guys were in their life and the pressure they felt to fit in and be
accepted for what/where you are, not who you are.
I'll be buying this one on DVD when it comes out.
